newy.com.au – Lake Macquarie City Council has turned the first sod on a $2.1 million project to build a new amenities block at Douglass Street Oval in Dora Creek, replacing the previous building after it was damaged beyond repair in a traffic incident last year and demolished.
The new structure will include female friendly changerooms, a canteen, accessible toilets, storage space and a referees’ room. Council said the replacement had been prioritised so Southlakes Roosters and other user groups could return to the venue as soon as possible.
Lake Macquarie Mayor Adam Shultz said: “We know how frustrating it can be to have sporting facilities that clubs and communities rely on out of action, so we’re making sure we get shovels in the ground at Douglass Street to enable a speedy return to sport at this important venue.”
“Sport, especially at the grassroots and junior level, is at the heart of Lake Macquarie’s community, so we’re keen to make sure everyone can get back on the field with the facilities they deserve as soon as possible,” he said.
Local contractor Mat Brown Building has been appointed to lead the project and will set up on site this week ahead of construction. The project is expected to be completed by late 2026.
Southlakes Roosters club president Kellie Masters said the works would support the growing club of more than 350 players and volunteers. “The upgraded amenities at Douglass Street Oval will allow us to properly activate the ground for training and competition while supporting the continued growth of our club,” she said.
She said participation was increasing across the club, particularly in the female program, and the new facilities would provide modern, inclusive spaces for players, volunteers and families.
