newy.com.au – Morisset’s Bernie Goodwin Park has officially opened after local teenage girls helped design the upgraded public space through the NSW Government’s Safer Cities program.

The project was delivered by the Hunter and Central Coast Development Corporation in partnership with teens from Morisset and surrounding areas, who took part in workshops on what would make public places feel safe, inclusive and fun.

Their ideas were incorporated into the park, including social seating, hammocks, inlaid trampolines and gardens, creating a new space for young people to gather, relax and connect.

The park is near a high school, transport, shops and sporting facilities, and is now open to the public alongside Bernie Goodwin Park Playground on Newcastle Street, Morisset.

The NSW Government said the project formed part of its initial $35 million investment in the Safer Cities program, aimed at improving safety in public spaces across the state.

Minister for the Hunter and Member for Swansea Yasmin Catley said, “When we invest in spaces where teenagers can gather safely and confidently, we’re not just improving our communities, we’re also strengthening the future that they will one day lead.”

Minister for Women and Member for Charlestown Jodie Harrison said, “Teenage girls have told us they need public spaces where they feel safe and welcome to hang out with friends.”

Independent Member for Lake Macquarie Greg Piper said the project showed the value of including local girls in the design process, while HCCDC chief executive Valentina Misevska said their ideas had helped shape the area into “something special that they can now enjoy”.
