newy.com.au – Lake Macquarie lifeguards have raised more than $6000 for Emma’s Warriors after finishing second in the annual Evolution Cup surf competition at Merewether Beach.

The event was held on Thursday 5 March as part of Surfest, with Lake Mac Lifeguards Alex Marshall, Saxon Lumsden, Connor Lee and James McMorland representing the council team. The Lake Mac squad has won the title five times in previous years.

Lake Macquarie Councillor Jack Antcliff said the team had exceeded its $5000 fundraising goal for the local charity while again performing strongly in the competition.

“I challenged the team last year to increase the fundraising campaign, and it’s been great to see the organisation get behind our incredible lifeguards to support the charity,” he said.

“We take our hats off to the City of Newcastle for winning the competition this year – a bit of friendly competition never goes astray.”

“It just always makes spectating that little bit more competitive.”

Lake Macquarie manager leisure services Brad Sutton said the event was designed to bring local organisations together while raising money for people in need.

“The Lake Mac team embodies true community spirit, showcasing diverse water skills and a strong group of talented surfers,” he said.

“Surfing is part of our culture on the east coast and taking on this sport whilst raising funds for those in need is all the more rewarding.”

Funds raised will support Emma’s Warriors, founded by Alex and Brendan Walsh after their daughter Emma was diagnosed with and recovered from Leukemia. The charity helps families facing long hospital stays by providing bill assistance and care packs for sick teens and tweens.
