newy.com.au – Weston Bears Park has reopened after a multi-million-dollar overhaul, with upgraded playing and spectator facilities officially unveiled at the Government Road venue.

The redevelopment included refurbishment of the existing grandstand to add a new clubroom, canteen, office and members’ space, along with new team changerooms, referee facilities and a gym. New spectator amenities, improved accessibility, a new carpark and associated landscaping were also delivered as part of the project.

The works were funded through a $3 million grant from the Australian Government’s Growing Regions Program and are aimed at improving comfort, functionality and safety for players, spectators and the broader community.

Weston Bears FC, established in 1907, is one of Australia’s oldest football clubs and currently competes in the Northern NSW division of the men’s National Premier League.

Cessnock City Mayor Daniel Watton said the project had created a first-class regional venue while supporting the club’s future growth. “This project has breathed new life into the home of one of our LGA’s proudest sporting organisations, creating a first-class venue that also opens the door for other opportunities such as visits from top-flight teams looking to bring a fixture to a regional area,” he said.

He said the improved facilities would also strengthen support for the club’s female players. “Importantly, the facility will provide a platform for future growth at the club and enable Weston Bears to better support its female player base.”

Federal Member for Hunter and Special Envoy for Men’s Health Dan Repacholi said the redevelopment was a major boost for local sport and the Weston community. “The Weston Bears are a proud part of our region’s sporting history, and I’m really pleased the Australian Government could contribute $3 million to help deliver this fantastic upgrade through the Growing Regions Program,” he said.

Mr Repacholi said the investment would help the club cater for players, volunteers and families while making the venue safer, more inclusive and more accessible. He said the improvements would also help the club grow its women’s and girls’ teams and encourage more locals to take part in the game.
