newy.com.au – Charges have been laid after a man was shot by police in Newcastle this week, with a critical incident investigation continuing into the circumstances of the incident.

NSW Police said officers from the Northern Operations Support Group and the Northern Region Domestic Violence High Risk Offender Team went to a unit block on Honeysuckle Drive about 8.30am on Tuesday, 3 March 2026, to arrest a man wanted on five outstanding warrants.

Police said officers forced entry to a unit where the 36-year-old man, allegedly armed with a knife, confronted them. Two Tasers were deployed but were ineffective, police said, before the man allegedly continued threatening officers with the knife and an officer discharged a firearm.

The man suffered a gunshot wound to the shoulder and was taken to John Hunter Hospital in a stable condition before being airlifted to Royal North Shore Hospital, where he remains in a serious but stable condition under police guard. Police have been told his injuries are not considered life-threatening.

Police said the five outstanding warrants, relating to alleged domestic violence, firearm, drug and traffic offences, have since been executed. The matters were mentioned in Bail Division Court 2 on Wednesday, 4 March 2026, and again on Friday, 6 March 2026.

A critical incident team from Lake Macquarie Police District will continue investigating the shooting. The investigation will be reviewed by Professional Standards Command and overseen by the Law Enforcement Conduct Commission.
