newy.com.au – A new kiosk and accessible public toilets at Newcastle’s Foreshore Park are due to open in late January, with a free community event planned for Saturday 31 January 2026 to mark the milestone.

The kiosk and amenities are the first project to be delivered under the Harbour Foreshore Masterplan, which aims to better connect public spaces between the city and the harbour’s edge.

City of Newcastle said work was almost complete on the new kiosk and amenities, housed in what it described as an “architecturally striking” building beside the park’s new regional-level accessible playspace and waterplay area, which is under construction and expected to be finished by late 2026.

Chair of City of Newcastle’s Asset Advisory Committee, Cr Declan Clausen, said the Harbour Foreshore was a “major drawcard for Novocastrians and visitors from across the region and beyond”, and the new facilities would improve the experience for park users and major events. “As the first project to be delivered under the masterplan, the completion of the new kiosk and accessible amenities will be a key milestone in City of Newcastle’s ongoing revitalisation of this area,” he said.

The amenities include unisex ambulant toilets, a parent’s change room and a Changing Places facility designed for people who cannot use standard accessible toilets. City of Newcastle said a bespoke concrete table and bench seating, along with low concrete walls, would provide a mix of formal and informal seating, while a new footpath would help connect the area with existing paths to improve access.

The kiosk will be operated by Thomas and Nova Carias-Cox who have run the Sunnyboy kiosk at Dixon Park Beach for the past three years. The couple also operate three Morning Market Coffee locations at Whitebridge, Newcastle West and Warners Bay.

The kiosk will be known as Sunnyboy Park and will offer a family-friendly menu including fish and chips, hamburgers, sandwiches, ice creams, refreshments and coffee. “We’re genuinely excited to be taking on Sunnyboy Park at the Foreshore,” Mr Carias-Cox said, describing plans for “a relaxed, welcoming spot where families can spend time, kids can play and everyone can enjoy great food and coffee in the heart of the park”.

State Member for Newcastle Tim Crakanthorp said the NSW Government supported projects that provided “enhanced public spaces for all members of the community”, and welcomed the kiosk going to local operators. “These new amenities will provide high-quality, accessible public infrastructure for all Novocastrians to use,” he said.

City of Newcastle said the Foreshore Park projects were supported by the NSW Government, Variety the Children’s Charity, the Touched by Olivia Foundation and the Newcastle Port Community Contribution Fund, with more event information to be published closer to 31 January via the project page on its website.
