newy.com.au – City of Newcastle has announced a three-day program to mark the reopening of the expanded Newcastle Art Gallery, including a free Friday Night Sounds street party on Laman Street on Friday 27 February 2026.

The reopening on Saturday 28 February 2026 will follow what the council says is its largest capital works project and most significant commitment to cultural infrastructure, as the gallery more than doubles its footprint at the corner of Laman and Darby streets.

City of Newcastle chief executive officer Jeremy Bath said the reopening “represents a landmark moment for City of Newcastle and the city’s cultural landscape”, marking “the completion of the largest capital works project and most significant commitment to cultural infrastructure in City of Newcastle’s history”.

“This […] feat [was] achieved on the back of more than 16 years of fundraising and perseverance,” Bath said, adding the expanded venue would feature 13 galleries and an additional 1,600 square metres of exhibition space. He said the gallery would be “the largest public art institution in New South Wales outside Sydney” and a “fitting home for our nationally significant $145 million collection”.

The expansion has been designed to build on the original gallery’s brutalist architecture, with new facilities including a secure international standard loading dock, a café, retail shop, multi-purpose program space and learning studio.

Newcastle Art Gallery director Lauretta Morton OAM said the redevelopment would allow long-term displays of the gallery’s world-class permanent collection for the first time, alongside larger Australian and international exhibitions. “With the expansion nearing completion, we are preparing to share more of our collection […] with a level of ambition and visibility that reflects its importance,” Morton said.

Friday Night Sounds will turn Laman Street into a temporary sculpture park for one night, featuring works created by local artists from the gallery’s collection, alongside interactive family spaces, roving performances, live music and DJs, food trucks, a pop-up bar and lighting installations. Inside the gallery, visitors will be able to preview the new major exhibition, Iconic, Loved, Unexpected, through events activating the gallery spaces.

Across the opening weekend, the gallery will host artist talks, a collaborative community artmaking project and live performances spanning music, dance, poetry and performance art.

Iconic, Loved, Unexpected will span two levels and showcase more than 500 works from the early nineteenth century to today, including artists with local ties such as Joseph Lycett, William Dobell, Margaret Olley and John Olsen, as well as leading First Nations artists including Emily Kam Kngwarray, Sally Gabori, Tracey Moffatt, Archie Moore and Albert Namatjira, and international figures from Auguste Rodin to Kazuo Yagi.

The expansion is supported by $5 million from the Australian Government and $5 million from the NSW Government, along with $12.5 million from the Newcastle Art Gallery Foundation, with the foundation currently seeking a further $500,000 through a public fundraising campaign.
