Newcastle is set to host four pool matches during the 2027 Men’s Rugby World Cup, marking a significant milestone for the city. This announcement, made on 30 January 2025, highlights Newcastle’s growing prominence in international sports.
The 2027 tournament will be the first Rugby World Cup held in Australia since 2003. Sydney’s Accor Stadium has been confirmed as the venue for the final, with other host cities including Brisbane, Melbourne, Perth, Adelaide, Townsville, and Newcastle.
Hosting these matches is expected to provide a substantial boost to Newcastle’s economy. Drawing from recent tournaments, the 2023 Rugby World Cup in France generated a net economic impact of €871 million, with €1.8 billion in total spending.
Similarly, the 2019 tournament in Japan contributed £4.3 billion to the local economy.
While specific projections for Newcastle are pending, the influx of international visitors and global media attention is anticipated to significantly benefit the city’s businesses and tourism sector.
Tim Crakanthorp MP, State Member for Newcastle, emphasized the significance of this event, stating, “This is a massive win for Newcastle. The home matches will showcase our incredible city to the international community.” He also highlighted the anticipated economic benefits, noting that tens of thousands of touring supporters will provide a multi-million-dollar boost to the local economy.
The selection of Newcastle as a host city underscores its importance to New South Wales’ visitor economy. As the state’s second-largest city, Newcastle’s inclusion in this global event reflects its capacity to host world-class sporting fixtures and its appeal as a destination for international visitors.
The 2027 Men’s Rugby World Cup is scheduled to take place from 1 October to 13 November 2027, featuring 24 teams competing across various Australian cities. The tournament’s expansion from 20 to 24 teams aims to enhance global participation and competitiveness in the sport.
As preparations commence, Newcastle is poised to leverage this opportunity to showcase its vibrant culture, hospitality, and passion for sports to a worldwide audience.
