The Hunter Transmission Project will establish a new high-voltage 500-kilovolt (kV) transmission line spanning approximately 100 kilometres between Bayswater in the Upper Hunter and Olney in the Lower Hunter. This initiative aims to enhance the state’s energy grid by connecting existing 500 kV lines and creating a robust “ring” of transmission infrastructure, forming the backbone of NSW’s electricity network for generations.

The project is designed with a “Hunter-first” policy, ensuring local economic benefits by leveraging the region’s diverse skill base and creating employment opportunities. Around 700 jobs are expected to be generated during construction, spanning roles such as labourers, engineers, and electricians.

EnergyCo has shortlisted seven contractors for the project’s key work packages, including transmission line and substation construction. Tender documents are being finalised for the selected groups, which include notable joint ventures such as Acciona Genus and UGL Engineering CPB Contractors.

EnergyCo CEO Hannah McCaughey emphasised the importance of the project in securing reliable and renewable energy for NSW, stating, “The Hunter Transmission Project will form the backbone of NSW’s future electricity grid, enabling the region to play a pivotal role in the state’s clean energy transition while driving economic growth.”

Transgrid CEO Brett Redman echoed this sentiment, highlighting the project’s role in delivering cleaner, more affordable energy to households and businesses while supporting the state’s transition away from coal-fired power.

The final delivery of the Hunter Transmission Project remains subject to a formal contract, design approvals, and necessary regulatory processes. EnergyCo will continue to work closely with the community and stakeholders to ensure the project meets local needs and expectations.
