Newcastle boaters are being urged to make safety their top priority as large numbers of vessels are expected on the Hunter Central Coast waterways this Australia Day long weekend.

Marine Rescue NSW Commissioner Alex Barrell has warned that with more people taking to the water, the likelihood of incidents increases significantly. “We want everyone to have a great time and enjoy our magnificent waterways, but we also want them to return home safely,” he said.

Marine Rescue NSW, which relies on more than 700 volunteers in the Hunter Central Coast region, expects a surge in activity throughout the holiday period. “Our crews will be on standby around the clock,” Commissioner Barrell noted. “Last year, during the three-day Australia Day long weekend, our volunteers completed 34 search and rescue missions, helping 86 people back to shore. We would like to see those numbers drop this year.”

Commissioner Barrell emphasised that boaters can play a major role in preventing emergencies by taking simple precautions. “Ensure your vessel is in good working order, use clean fuel and carry some in reserve, always wear a lifejacket, and make sure you have the correct safety equipment. Also, remember to Log On with Marine Rescue NSW using our free app or VHF channel 16 before heading out, so we know where you’re going and when you plan to return.”

He also urged boaters and paddlers to stay informed about weather conditions, both before departure and while on the water. “If the forecast looks unfavourable, it’s best to stay ashore. Always check conditions and continue monitoring them. If in doubt, don’t go out.”

Marine Rescue NSW is a volunteer-based, not-for-profit professional organisation committed to keeping people safe on the water and supporting local communities. With a dedicated team ready to respond, Commissioner Barrell said he hopes boaters will do their part to ensure a safe and enjoyable long weekend for all.
