Young people across Newcastle are being invited to help shape the city’s future by joining one of City of Newcastle’s eight advisory committees, including the Youth Council Standing Committee.

Expressions of interest are now open for the Youth Council, which offers Novocastrians aged between 15 and 25 the opportunity to champion issues that matter to them, develop vital leadership skills, and influence key decisions within the local community. It is one of several committees seeking fresh voices to drive initiatives and deliver meaningful outcomes for Newcastle.

Deputy Lord Mayor Callum Pull, who made history as Newcastle’s youngest-ever elected Councillor, will serve his second term as a Councillor representative on the Youth Council. He said it was crucial to engage future leaders in conversations that guide local government.

“These young representatives are the future leaders of our city, so we need to respect their ideas,” Councillor Pull said.
“Our members work together to identify key issues impacting youth and develop strategies that encourage solutions and contribute to a more inclusive and youth-friendly Newcastle.
By fostering youth leadership, promoting active participation, and giving young people a voice in local matters, we are not only empowering the next generation but also strengthening the fabric of our community.”

Serving as volunteers for a four-year Council term, members of the Youth Council organise activities for young people, offer guidance on local youth-focused programs, and assist with implementing the Newcastle 2040 Community Strategic Plan. They also help allocate Youth Week grants and advise on applications for relevant funding opportunities.

In addition to the Youth Council, other committees seeking new members include:

  1. Access Inclusion Standing Committee
  2. Guraki Aboriginal Standing Committee
  3. Public Art Standing Committee
  4. Community & Culture Strategic Advisory Committee
  5. Infrastructure Strategic Advisory Committee
  6. Liveable Cities Strategic Advisory Committee
  7. Strategy & Innovation Strategic Advisory Committee

Expressions of interest close on 24 January 2025. For more information and to apply, visit the City of Newcastle website.
