newy.com.au – Charli House, a 21-year-old apprentice from Maitland, is breaking new ground as the Australian Rail Track Corporation’s (ARTC) first school-based apprentice. Nearing the completion of her fourth year in ARTC’s National Pathways Program, Charli is set to become a fully qualified Rail Signal Electrician, marking a significant milestone in her career and the rail industry.
Charli’s journey began at just 16, when she chose an apprenticeship over university, becoming part of ARTC’s efforts to attract young talent to the sector. Her determination has been evident throughout her training, earning her a Certificate III in Electrotechnology and working towards a Certificate IV in Rail Signalling. Balancing hands-on work at ARTC’s Maitland depot with TAFE training, she has excelled in a traditionally male-dominated field, serving as a role model for others considering a rail industry career.
Growing up in a rail-focused family, with her mother in network control and her father with Pacific National, Charli was drawn to the electrical side of the industry during her school years. A work placement in domestic electrical applications solidified her interest, setting her on a path that has led to real-world contributions in rail signalling. Her responsibilities have included maintenance of points, signals, and interlocking systems—essential for the safety and efficiency of the rail network.
Now preparing for her final trade exams before Christmas, Charli reflects on the opportunities ARTC has provided. “Working towards two trade qualifications has been incredibly rewarding,” she said. “I enjoy spending time outdoors and appreciate the support from a large company like ARTC. The experience has been challenging but fulfilling, and I’m excited for the future.”
Luke Hayes, Charli’s Work Group Leader at ARTC, praised her achievements, saying, “Charli is a shining example of what can be accomplished with passion and the right support. Her success underscores the diverse opportunities in the rail industry and the importance of hands-on training.”
ARTC currently supports over 80 apprentices and trainees in the rail industry and welcomes applications through its career portal for anyone inspired by Charli’s success.
