newy.com.au – A new social housing development at Robinson Avenue has been unveiled, promising modern and accessible homes for residents and a significant impact on Newcastle’s growing public housing waitlist.
The state-funded project has transformed a site that previously hosted five aging homes into a two-storey complex featuring 20 units. With eight one-bedroom and twelve two-bedroom residences, the development will accommodate nearly 40 people in the heart of Lambton, directly across from Jesmond Park.
Accessibility has been prioritised, with two units built to adaptable standards for people with disabilities and step-free ground-floor access for improved mobility. The complex is conveniently situated within walking distance to local amenities, including schools and a bustling shopping precinct, with a bus stop located less than 300 metres away.
The $9 million project was undertaken by Homes NSW in partnership with Kingston Building. During construction, over 53 local jobs were created, contributing to the community beyond the provision of housing.
Wallsend MP Sonia Hornery expressed her commitment to addressing the region’s housing crisis, highlighting the long-standing demand for more social housing. “Since 2007, finding public housing for people in need has been the number one issue I’ve worked on,” she said. “This new complex is not just about housing; it offers a safe, attractive, and accessible living environment.”
The environmentally sustainable design features over 40 native trees and solar panels to support common area energy needs. NSW Minister for Housing and Homelessness, Rose Jackson, acknowledged the urgent demand in the area. “With over 2,000 people on Newcastle’s social housing waitlist, developments like this are crucial,” she stated. “Our commitment to delivering more fit-for-purpose housing across the region remains strong.”
The NSW Government’s partnership with Newcastle City Council has also been instrumental, streamlining approvals and expediting housing projects. As construction continues in other areas like Waratah West and Wallsend, the community anticipates further housing relief.
Residents will soon move into the newly completed units, marking a meaningful step towards reducing local housing pressures and supporting vulnerable populations with secure, well-designed homes.
