A 56-year-old motorcyclist has been fined nearly $3,000 and had his licence suspended after police caught him speeding at 200km/h on the M1 Motorway near Somersby.
Officers from Brisbane Water Highway Patrol were conducting routine speed enforcement on the M1 on Tuesday when they detected the man travelling at 143km/h using a LIDAR device. As they pursued the rider, his speed continued to rise, eventually reaching 200km/h by the time police stopped him near Ourimbah.
Upon being pulled over, the rider reportedly apologised for his excessive speed. However, he was issued with a penalty notice for exceeding the speed limit by more than 45km/h, resulting in a $2,959 fine and six demerit points. His licence has also been suspended for six months, and his motorcycle’s number plates were surrendered to Service NSW for three months.
Police have reminded the public that speeding remains one of the biggest contributors to fatalities on NSW roads, urging all motorists to obey speed limits and drive responsibly.
With speed enforcement a key focus on major highways, officers will continue patrolling high-risk areas to ensure the safety of all road users.
