Leukaemia survivor Sophie Berude, a Year 8 student, knows all too well the feeling of long days confined to a hospital bed. Now, at just 14, she is determined to brighten the lives of other children facing cancer treatment, having already raised over $40,000 for causes close to her heart.

Sophie’s journey through treatment has inspired her to give back in significant ways. Her involvement with Redkite and the John Hunter Children’s Hospital has made her a standout figure in the community. Earlier this year, Sophie was named ‘One to Watch’ in the NSW Women of the Year Awards for her ongoing dedication to helping young patients. Most recently, she took home the title of Lake Macquarie’s Young Citizen of the Year at the 2024 Lake Mac Awards.

“The award is really special because I know how hard it can be being in the hospital for such a long time,” Sophie explained. “That’s why I’m so passionate about the work I’m doing with Redkite and the John Hunter Hospital’s Joy campaigns. It’s amazing to know that I can help make other kids’ days just a little bit brighter.”

Sophie’s work isn’t just about recognition; her efforts are genuinely focused on lifting the spirits of young patients who may be going through one of the toughest experiences of their lives. However, her achievements haven’t gone unnoticed. Lake Macquarie Mayor Adam Shultz praised Sophie, stating: “People like Sophie don’t seek recognition, but it’s important we show our gratitude for everything they’re doing for our community. The Lake Mac Awards allow us to do that.”

Nominations are now open for the 2025 Lake Mac Awards, where community members can be recognised for their contributions across 13 categories, including arts and creativity, diversity, volunteering, and environmental enhancement. Sophie is encouraging others to nominate themselves or someone they know. “Even small acts of kindness can make a big difference,” she said.

Nominations close on 17 November, and categories include the prestigious Young Citizen of the Year and the highest honour, the Lake Mac Ambassador Award. Top Gun pilot Matt Hall, a native of the region, was named this year’s Ambassador for his efforts in bringing international attention to Lake Macquarie and his charitable contributions.
