Cessnock’s Piranhas Cricket Club has been left reeling after vandals damaged East End Oval, causing widespread frustration among both senior and junior teams. The incident, which occurred in the early hours of yesterday morning, saw motorbikes tear through the freshly maintained grounds, leaving the field in an unusable state.
Piranhas Cricket Club has urged anyone with information to contact the club or Cessnock Police. The club is determined to find those responsible, calling on the community to help “name and shame” the vandals. The club also mentioned its intention to see the motorbikes confiscated once the individuals are caught.
Club members and supporters have been vocal about the incident on social media, with comments highlighting anger and frustration. Allan Heath wrote, “Hope the cops get them before Adam Williams does,” while another member, Brock Williams, added, “They picked the wrong ground to do that on, that’s for sure.”
Other local cricket grounds in the region, including Denman and Shamrock, were also targeted by vandals, sparking concern that this may be a wider issue affecting clubs across the area. “It’s time for Cessnock City Council to put the new fence around the ground,” suggested Mathew Zechel in an online comment.
The club has said it will continue to work with Cessnock City Council and local police to enhance security measures and prevent future incidents. For now, the Piranhas are focused on repairing the damage and getting back on the field as soon as possible.
The community’s support will be crucial in bringing the perpetrators to justice, and the club remains hopeful that they can move forward from this senseless act of vandalism.
