Newcastle residents are being encouraged to participate in shaping the future of the city’s cycling and pedestrian infrastructure, with a proposal to enhance the heritage-listed Parkway Avenue now open for public feedback.
The upgrade, which focuses on the stretch between National Park Street and Smith Street in Hamilton South, aims to create safer and more accessible pathways for cyclists and pedestrians. The plan includes the installation of on-road cycle lanes, sections of shared off-road pathways, and modifications to two roundabouts. Additionally, two combined pedestrian-cyclist crossings across Parkway Avenue and its iconic grassed median are proposed.
City of Newcastle is spearheading the project, utilising $469,500 in funding from the Australian Government’s Black Spot Program, administered by Transport for NSW. The initiative is designed to improve safety and convenience for those who travel through the area, while preserving the avenue’s historic charm.
Executive Manager Transport and Regulation, Ryan Tranter, explained the broader benefits of the development.
“This project will provide safe, convenient connections between our shopping centres, popular destinations, and homes, encouraging people to walk and ride more often,” Mr Tranter said.
He stressed the importance of community feedback, particularly from residents, students, and commuters who frequently use Parkway Avenue.
“We want everyone to have their say during the public exhibition period, as feedback will play a crucial role in shaping the final design,” he added.
The proposed changes aim to maintain the character of Parkway Avenue, ensuring that its well-known Norfolk pine trees and grand median are preserved, while adjustments to kerb lines and the addition of speed cushions will improve safety at key intersections.
This project is part of a broader effort to enhance Newcastle’s cycling infrastructure, in line with the city’s ‘On Our Bikes’ Cycling Plan. The improvements on Parkway Avenue will complement other upgrades currently underway, such as the $2 million safety-focused redevelopment of Maud Street in Waratah West, which includes signalised crossings and realigned paths for improved accessibility.
The public is invited to view the concept plans and provide feedback online until 5pm, Monday, 18 November 2024. Contributions from the community will help finalise the detailed design.
