Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) played a key role in a recent multi-agency vehicle crash simulation held in Doyalson, designed to strengthen the collaboration between emergency services. The exercise, which simulated a severe car accident, was aimed at refining the rescue techniques of FRNSW firefighters and NSW Ambulance paramedics.
The staged crash scenario involved a collision between two vehicles, resulting in one of the cars flipping over. Multiple dummy patients, each with varying injuries, added to the realism of the situation. Firefighters practised their vehicle stabilisation methods, using hydraulic cutting tools to create access points for patient extraction.
In addition to the physical rescue, paramedics worked alongside FRNSW crews to administer mock emergency medical care, including responding to a simulated cardiac arrest. NSW Ambulance communications staff were on hand to offer guidance, ensuring the drill mirrored the demands of a real-life emergency.
Member for Swansea, Yasmin Catley, praised the exercise for its timing as NSW prepares for a potentially dangerous summer on the roads.
“We tend to see more road accidents during the summer months,” Ms Catley said. “Training exercises like these help ensure our emergency crews are ready to respond swiftly and effectively in real-life situations. They do a remarkable job supporting our communities, and their dedication is something we all deeply appreciate.”
FRNSW Chief Superintendent Terrence Farley echoed the importance of these simulations, noting the benefits of inter-agency cooperation.
“When our crews respond to actual accidents, they can act decisively because they’ve trained for these exact scenarios,” Chief Superintendent Farley said. “Working closely with paramedics allows us to align our procedures, communicate better, and deliver the best possible outcomes for anyone injured.”
These types of drills not only prepare first responders for the technical aspects of rescues but also strengthen teamwork and communication, ensuring that both FRNSW and NSW Ambulance teams can seamlessly operate under pressure when it matters most.
