A woman has been arrested after a dramatic early morning incident at the Tanilba Bay foreshore, during which she allegedly attempted to evade police by swimming into the bay and later threatened officers with a syringe.

Around 2:10 am on Friday, 4 October 2024, officers from the Port Stephens-Hunter Police District were conducting routine patrols along the Tanilba Bay foreshore when they approached a 27-year-old woman wanted in connection with several domestic violence offences.

According to police reports, as officers moved towards the woman, she entered the water in an apparent bid to escape. However, after a short time, she returned to the shore, where she fled to nearby Tanilba Park. It was there that the woman allegedly brandished a syringe and threatened police officers.

Following a brief negotiation, police managed to de-escalate the situation and arrested the woman without further incident. She was transported to Maitland Police Station, where she was formally charged with multiple offences, including three counts of destroying or damaging property, stalking or intimidating with intent to cause fear, and using an offensive weapon to prevent lawful detention.

The woman was refused bail and is due to appear before Raymond Terrace Local Court later today.

No officers were injured during the incident, and investigations into the matter are ongoing.
