Hunter Police will be out in force this long weekend as part of Operation Labour Day 2024, a state-wide initiative aimed at reducing road fatalities and dangerous driving incidents. The operation, which runs from 12:01 am Friday, 4 October, until 11:59 pm Monday, 7 October 2024, focuses on enforcing road safety with double demerits in place for key offences.
Double demerits will apply to speeding, seatbelt, mobile phone, and motorcycle helmet violations, with authorities also cracking down on drink and drug driving, as well as fatigue-related offences. Officers from the Traffic and Highway Patrol Command will lead the operation, with support from general duties police across all districts, including the Hunter region.
Hunter Police have warned drivers to be cautious over the long weekend, as patrols will be increased across major roads and regional areas, where the majority of recent road fatalities have occurred. As of this year, 254 people have lost their lives in crashes on NSW roads, with 184 of those deaths occurring in regional areas.
“Police will be out in force across the state to encourage compliance with road rules,” said Traffic and Highway Patrol Commander, Acting Assistant Commissioner David Driver. “The risk of a fine or the loss of demerit points should deter people from breaking the law. However, not putting the lives of others at risk should be the incentive to use our roads safely.”
Ralston Fernandes, Director of Road Safety at Transport for NSW, echoed the message, reminding drivers that even a moment’s lapse in concentration can lead to tragedy. He urged motorists to slow down, avoid using mobile phones, and ensure seatbelts and helmets are worn correctly.
With increased traffic expected over the long weekend, Hunter Police recommend motorists plan their trips using tools like the Live Traffic NSW app or myjourneynsw.info to avoid delays and stay informed on road conditions. Members of the public are encouraged to report dangerous driving to Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
Operation Labour Day 2024 aims to make roads safer for everyone. Double demerits will be in effect until midnight on Monday, 7 October.
