Motorists should prepare for overnight traffic changes at the intersection of A15 Newcastle Road and A15 Thomas Street, Wallsend, as roadworks are scheduled to begin next week. The works are part of an improvement project aimed at facilitating the movement of oversized and overmass (OSOM) vehicles from the Port of Newcastle to key routes such as the M1 Pacific Motorway and the M15 Hunter Expressway.
The planned works will take place from Tuesday, 8 October to Thursday, 10 October, between 7pm and 5am, to minimise disruption during peak hours. The project includes line marking, installation of fencing, and new signage, and is expected to be completed over a week, subject to weather conditions.
A detour will be in place on Thursday, 10 October, affecting the westbound approach to the roundabout, with a temporary speed limit of 40 km/h. Motorists will not be able to continue straight through the roundabout onto Newcastle Road or make a right turn onto Longworth Avenue.
Those needing access to Longworth Avenue will be redirected via Thomas Street, with traffic looping back to the roundabout for a left turn onto Longworth Avenue. Freight operators unable to follow the detour will need to use an alternative route, turning around at the Transfield Avenue roundabout and heading eastbound on Thomas Street to reach Longworth Avenue. Operators should plan for an additional 10 minutes of travel time due to the detours.
Traffic control measures, including lane closures and a 40 km/h speed limit, will be enforced during work hours to ensure the safety of both motorists and workers.
Drivers are reminded to follow all posted signs and directions from traffic controllers. For the most up-to-date information on traffic conditions, the public is encouraged to download the Live Traffic NSW app, visit livetraffic.com, or call 132 701.
State Route 15 is a state significant highway that begins just past King Street on the corner of Parry Street and Stewart Avenue in Newcastle West, travels through Lambton, Wallsend, Hunter Expressway, Singleton, Muswellbrook, Scone, Tamworth, then over the QLD Border into Redbank where it meets up with Western Brisbane’s M2.
