Northern NSW Football Limited has received a significant financial boost, securing over $420,000 in federal funding to support women and girls in sport. The grant, totaling $423,850, is part of the Australian Government’s $200 million Play Our Way program, aimed at breaking down barriers to female participation in sports across the country.

The funding will be channelled into Northern NSW Football’s Women in Football Scholarship and Participation Program. This initiative is designed to provide education and development opportunities for women, focusing on First Nations, culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD), and women with disabilities. The overarching goal is to diversify and strengthen the presence of women in football, both on and off the field.

Northern NSW Football was selected from over 660 applicants nationwide, with the Play Our Way program prioritising projects that support women and girls who face additional challenges in accessing sports. The grant will be used to facilitate the education and training of participants, enhancing representation and leadership within football.

Federal Support for Gender Equality in Sport

Minister for Sport, Anika Wells, expressed her enthusiasm for the initiative, highlighting the importance of making sport more inclusive.

“Play Our Way is about creating equal opportunities for women and girls to experience the fun, satisfaction, and health benefits that sport offers,” said Ms. Wells. “The overwhelming response to this grant opportunity shows that communities across Australia are eager to support women and girls in sport.”

Local Member for Shortland, Pat Conroy, also extended his congratulations to Northern NSW Football for their successful application.

“I’m confident that the Women in Football Scholarship and Participation Program will make a significant impact on the lives of women and girls in our community,” Mr. Conroy stated. “Northern NSW Football has been a vital part of our sporting landscape, and this grant will help them continue to lead the way in creating opportunities for women in sport.”

Focus on Facility Upgrades Still Ongoing

In addition to the scholarships and participation programs, the Play Our Way program also includes a facilities stream aimed at upgrading or constructing sporting facilities to better cater to female athletes. The assessment of these applications is still underway.

More details on the Play Our Way initiative, including upcoming facility projects, can be found on the Department of Health’s website.
