The Newcastle community is in shock after the iconic Victorian rotunda in King Edward Park was severely damaged in an act of vandalism overnight. City officials discovered the destruction this morning, prompting outrage among residents and a call for increased security measures to protect the city’s heritage sites.

The rotunda, a cherished landmark constructed in 1910, suffered significant damage. A section of its ornate railing and all the decorative panelling around the base were forcibly removed and left scattered across the surrounding grass.

“This senseless act of vandalism is incredibly disappointing,” a Newcastle City Council spokesperson said. “The rotunda is not just an architectural feature; it’s a significant piece of Newcastle’s history and a beloved spot for community gatherings.”

King Edward Park, established in 1863, is one of Newcastle’s oldest and most picturesque parks. Overlooking the Pacific Ocean, the park has long been a favourite location for picnics, weddings, and cultural events. It features historic structures, walking trails, and the famed Bogey Hole—an ocean bath carved out by convicts in the early 19th century.

The Victorian rotunda itself has been a focal point within the park for over a century. Designed in the traditional bandstand style, it has hosted countless concerts, weddings, and public ceremonies. Its elegant ironwork and classic design are emblematic of the Edwardian era, adding historical charm to the park’s natural beauty.

Local historian Margaret Wilkinson commented, “The rotunda is a tangible link to Newcastle’s past. It represents our city’s development during a time of growth and prosperity in the early 1900s.”

Residents have expressed deep frustration and sadness over the incident. Wendy Watt, a lifelong Newcastle resident, said, “I was married in that rotunda 47 years ago. It’s heartbreaking to see it treated with such disrespect.”

Authorities have launched an investigation to identify those responsible. Police are reviewing security footage and are appealing to anyone who was in the area last night to come forward with information.

The vandalism has reignited discussions about the need for better protection of Newcastle’s historical landmarks. Suggestions from the community include installing surveillance cameras in key areas of the park and increasing nighttime security patrols.

Newcastle City Council is urging anyone with information about the vandalism to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000. The council is also encouraging residents to share this appeal to aid in the swift apprehension of those responsible.
