A 33-year-old man was assaulted at Queens Wharf in Newcastle yesterday evening, prompting a police investigation and a call for witnesses to come forward.

Around 6:30 pm on Wednesday, 25 September 2024, police were called to the ferry wharf following reports of an assault. According to the police statement, the man was approached by three unknown individuals who allegedly punched him twice in the head. Bystanders assisted the victim and contacted officers from Newcastle City Police District.

The victim, who is of Chinese descent and has lived in Australia since he was eight years old, shared his experience on a local online forum. He recounted that he was fishing when three teenagers, appearing to be intoxicated, one holding a large bottle of alcohol, began harassing him and attempted to take his fishing rod. Despite his efforts to leave, they followed him, directing racial slurs at him. He was struck on the side of his face and, according to witnesses, was also kicked in the head from behind.

“I can’t fathom the fact that I was trying to leave the situation, not provoking them, but they just kept following me,” he wrote. He expressed gratitude to the individuals who intervened and escorted him to safety.

Community members on social media have expressed outrage over the incident, offering support to the victim and condemning the behaviour. Many have called for increased security measures and urged anyone with information to come forward.

Police have commenced inquiries and are reviewing CCTV footage from the area. Anyone with information about the incident is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000. Information provided will be treated confidentially.

This isn’t the first time incidents have occurred in this location, community members have long called for better CCTV in the area and have been in touch with local MPs and the council.
