newy.com.au – The NSW Government is seeking a contractor to build a direct footpath from Holland Street to Wickham Park, a link Newcastle MP Tim Crakanthorp says will cut about 700 metres from the walk to the park.
Mr Crakanthorp said locals currently faced a journey of almost a kilometre. The shorter route would make it easier to reach the park’s sports fields and amenities.
The construction tender opened in August and is scheduled to close in late September. The work includes the footpath and a bridge over a grass channel, with preliminary site clearing now complete.
Transport Minister John Graham said construction would begin in November, although the government has qualified the timing as subject to approvals, procurement and weather conditions.
“We know the community has been waiting a long time for the Wickham Park footpath, so I’m pleased to announce that construction will commence in November,” Mr Graham said.
The site clean-up finished in August and included demolition of a dilapidated shed, along with the removal of rubbish and other contaminants. Mr Crakanthorp said the project had encountered several obstacles before reaching this stage.
Great Lifestyle of Wickham spokesperson Lyn Kilby welcomed the site clearing and progress towards a direct walking connection.
“The people of Wickham deserve easy access to local parks and amenities,” Ms Kilby said.
“I am so pleased to see the dilapidated shed demolished and cleaned up with a footpath on the way.”
The project is funded through the NSW Government’s additional $60 million commitment to expand walking and cycling infrastructure.
