At approximately 11:00 am on Monday, 23rd September, firefighters from the Wallarah Rural Fire Brigade were dispatched to a blaze on a small island off Lake Road in Swansea. A crew of three set out on the Lake Macquarie Fireboat Alpha but encountered difficulties accessing the island due to shallow surrounding waters.
A local resident stepped in to assist, offering the use of their shallow-hulled vessel to ferry the crew and their equipment to the island. Armed with a portable pump and hoses, the firefighters were able to reach the site of the fire, which had been caused by a barbecue mishap.
The team successfully extinguished the flames and conducted a thorough mop-up to ensure the area was safe. They also checked on the well-being of a person and a dog who were on the island at the time, confirming both were unharmed.
Community members praised the efforts on social media. One commenter noted, “Dude playing out Survivor in real life,” while another expressed concern, asking, “Was the man and the dog okay?” The Wallarah Rural Fire Brigade responded to reassure the public that all were safe.
“Well done to the crew and the generous member of the public involved,” the brigade stated. The incident highlights the importance of community support in emergency situations and the dedication of local firefighters in keeping residents safe.
