Port Stephens is ushering in a new era of animal care with the opening of its state-of-the-art animal refuge today in Millers Forest. The facility marks a milestone in the region’s commitment to animal welfare and responsible pet ownership.
After a competitive tender process, the three-year contract to operate the refuge was awarded to Iza Bren Furbabys Pty Ltd, trading as Port Stephens Animal Refuge. Known for managing successful boarding kennels, the company brings a wealth of experience and a passion for animal care to the community.
Ryan Falkenmire, Acting Development and Compliance Section Manager at Port Stephens Council, expressed confidence in the new operator’s ability to meet and exceed community expectations.
“The tender process was thorough, ensuring Council selected the most qualified provider based on their facility, experience, service level, and competitive pricing,” said Mr Falkenmire.
“While we initially sought a local operator, Iza Bren Furbabys Pty Ltd demonstrated exceptional merit, and the Millers Forest location was not considered a deterrent.”
“The new refuge aims to enhance animal welfare standards and streamline the rehoming process for dogs, cats and other animals in their care.
“All animals currently under the care of the previous provider will be relocated to the new facility, with a continued focus on rehoming safe and non-aggressive animals,” he added.
The new refuge aims to elevate animal welfare standards and streamline the rehoming process for dogs, cats, and other animals in their care. All animals currently housed by the previous provider will be transferred to the new facility, with a continued emphasis on finding loving homes for safe and non-aggressive animals.
To assist in the swift reunification of pets with their owners, the Council urges all pet owners to ensure their animals are microchipped and registered. Unclaimed animals will have a 14-day period before the refuge engages with two animal rescue organisations, providing a total of four weeks for owners to reclaim their pets or for them to be rehomed through rescue channels.
The opening of the new refuge also marks the end of an era. For many years, a dedicated local resident, Sue Summons, operated the previous facility with unwavering commitment.
“We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Sue and her team for their exceptional care of Port Stephens animals over the past years,” Mr Falkenmire said. “Their dedication and advocacy for animal rights have been invaluable to our community. As Sue steps back, we are confident that Iza Bren Furbabys Pty Ltd will continue her legacy of compassion and excellence.”
