NourishEd Australia, a grassroots initiative, has made a significant impact in its first month of operation in Lake Macquarie, providing vital support to the community’s most vulnerable and at-risk individuals. With the launch of its pantry service in Toronto, the organisation has already distributed over 150 food hampers and is gearing up to continue its efforts as demand rises amid ongoing cost-of-living challenges.
This Thursday, 26th September, NourishEd will celebrate another milestone with the launch of a second pantry day. The new service hours will run from 1pm to 6pm on Thursdays, complementing the existing Friday morning service from 9am to 1pm. Locals are invited to access the pantry with no need for reservations, while $10 hampers—packed with $35 worth of food—can be reserved online to ensure availability.
Since opening its doors, NourishEd has operated without government funding, relying entirely on community donations and support. NourishEd’s founder, Nic, explains, “Our goal is to provide immediate relief to those who need it most. The cost-of-living crisis is hitting hard, and we want to make sure no one goes hungry. This is a community-driven project, and we are here for everyone, regardless of their background or situation.”
In addition to the pantry, NourishEd has introduced a free community library and café, providing a welcoming space for residents to relax, connect, and access information on further support services. The open pantry model means that there are no barriers or eligibility requirements, allowing anyone in need to receive food assistance without prior bookings.
Nic emphasised that the service is available to all, stating, “We believe food insecurity and unnecessary hunger shouldn’t exist in a community like ours. We’re working to eliminate that with the help of our volunteers and by redistributing rescued food that would otherwise go to waste.”
The service aims to become a ‘Hub of Help’ in Lake Macquarie, offering more than just food support. By connecting those who use the pantry with further assistance, NourishEd hopes to address long-term challenges faced by vulnerable and disadvantaged residents in the area.
The pantry operates out of 3/6 The Boulevarde, Toronto, and is open to anyone in need of food support. For more information, or to arrange an interview, visit the NourishEd Australia website at nourished.org.au or contact Nic directly at 0485 903 202.
As the cost of living continues to rise, initiatives like NourishEd Australia play a crucial role in providing immediate, practical support to those facing financial difficulties. By expanding its services and increasing accessibility, the organisation hopes to make an even greater impact on the local community.
