MAITLAND COUNCIL: Farley Connectivity Boosted with $3 Million Infrastructure Upgrade

today24 September 2024

Background

Residents of the rapidly expanding suburb of Farley are set to benefit from a substantial road and footpath upgrade along Wollombi Road, aimed at improving connectivity and pedestrian safety.

Maitland City Council has recently completed a $3 million project, rehabilitating and widening the stretch of Wollombi Road between Green Street, Telarah, and Owl Pen Lane. The upgrade also includes the construction of a new shared pathway and a pedestrian bridge across Stony Creek, which will allow cyclists and pedestrians to move through the area more safely.

The works were funded through a combination of Maitland City Council’s Capital Works Program and contributions from local developers, reflecting the Council’s commitment to infrastructure in one of the city’s fastest-growing areas.

Farley has seen a significant increase in population, and the upgrades are expected to ease traffic and provide alternative transport options for residents. The new shared pathway, in particular, offers an important alternative to driving, catering to both pedestrians and cyclists.

Mayor Philip Penfold commented on the project’s significance, saying, “These improvements are essential to support Farley’s growing community. We are committed to creating a connected and safe environment for all our residents, whether they choose to walk, cycle, or drive.”

The footbridge spanning Stony Creek is a highlight of the project, with a 2.5-metre-wide pathway designed to accommodate both pedestrians and cyclists. The bridge and path are expected to see significant use as residents look for alternatives to car travel in a region where development is rapidly expanding.

Final touches on the project are set to be completed in the coming weeks, with landscaping and additional safety measures being added.

Maitland City Council’s broader infrastructure spending for the current financial year totals $29.2 million, and this project accounts for almost 10% of that total, showing the council’s prioritisation of Farley’s growth.

This latest development in Farley aligns with the Council’s strategy of promoting sustainable transport and improving access to Maitland’s suburbs. The upgrades not only enhance mobility for residents but also position Farley for future growth, reinforcing the city’s commitment to ongoing infrastructure investment.
