Fire crews swiftly responded to a bushfire near the South Wallsend Water Reservoirs last night, successfully containing the blaze with the help of newly installed hydrants and collaborative efforts from multiple stations.
At around 7:30 pm on Monday, emergency services were alerted to a fire outbreak along Transfield Avenue in Wallsend. Due to the challenging terrain and location, Fire & Rescue Wallsend requested assistance from neighbouring stations equipped with 4WD tanker appliances. Support came from Fire and Rescue NSW stations in Cardiff (251), Holmesville (498), Tarro (454), Tingira Heights (500), and Teralba (458).
Firefighters utilised the recently installed hydrants by Hunter Water at the 100-megalitre reservoir to refill their tankers efficiently, allowing them to combat the fire more effectively.
Approximately four hectares of bushland were scorched before the fire was brought under control. The Lake Macquarie Police District is treating the incident as suspicious and has commenced an investigation into the cause of the fire.
As the summer fire season approaches, authorities are urging the community to remain vigilant. Residents are advised to report any signs of smoke or fire in local bushland by contacting emergency services on 000 immediately.
