Police Appeal for Information Following Deliberate Bushfires in Redhead and Killingworth

today23 September 2024

Background

Lake Macquarie Police are appealing for information after two deliberately lit bushfires were ignited over the weekend in Redhead and Killingworth, burning several hectares of bushland.

The first fire occurred at approximately 6:55pm on Friday, 20 September 2024. A witness reported discovering the blaze in bushland off the Fernleigh Track near Redhead Road. The fire spread across three hectares of scrubland before fire crews were able to bring it under control.

In a separate incident, at around 8:30pm on Sunday, 22 September 2024, a second fire broke out along Burkes Fire Trail in Killingworth. This fire, along with several smaller spot fires, burned through four hectares before being contained by fire services.

According to reports, a vehicle was seen near the area shortly before the Killingworth fire started, raising suspicions that it may have been involved.

Authorities are urging anyone who may have information or witnessed suspicious activity in either area to come forward. Lake Macquarie Police are particularly interested in identifying the vehicle spotted near Burkes Fire Trail.

With warmer weather expected in the coming weeks, residents are being reminded to stay vigilant and report any suspicious behaviour, especially in bushland areas.

Anyone with information is encouraged to contact Lake Macquarie Police or Crime Stoppers. All reports can be made anonymously.
