One of the region’s top sporting venues, Cooks Square Park in East Maitland, is set to undergo a significant transformation with the construction of a modern amenities building. This follows a $1 million upgrade to the training field, with an additional $832,000 now secured for the new facilities.

The project, which is expected to be completed by January 2025, will bring much-needed improvements to the changerooms, making them more inclusive and accessible for both male and female players.

Meryl Swanson MP, Federal Member for Paterson, expressed her excitement for the upgrades, saying, “These improvements are exactly what our local athletes need to stay competitive and comfortable. The new facilities will elevate Maitland’s standing as a key location for regional sports.”

The development is seen as a win for both the local community and visiting teams, with the new amenities designed to support the growing number of female athletes in the area. Minister for Regional NSW, Tara Moriarty, highlighted the importance of the upgrades, stating, “These facilities will provide the privacy, comfort, and safety that all players deserve, especially as we see more women participating in local sports.”

Jason Linnane, Maitland City Council’s Director of City Services, noted that the improvements will have a lasting impact on the community. “The new amenities will cater to all abilities and genders, allowing Maitland Football Club to continue growing and improving the experience for everyone involved in local sport.”

Maitland FC President Steve Good added, “Our current changerooms date back to the 1970s, so this upgrade is long overdue. It will bring our facilities up to a modern standard, particularly for our female athletes, enhancing their experience at our grounds.”

Construction is set to begin next week, with a semi-permanent changeroom already in place to ensure minimal disruption to games during the building phase. The visiting teams will also have access to these temporary facilities.

This project has been made possible thanks to joint funding from the NSW Government and the Australian Government’s Local Roads and Community Infrastructure program.
