Families in Gillieston Heights are celebrating the first step in the long-awaited redevelopment of Gillieston Public School, with concept designs now released by the Minns Labor Government.
The project, which has been in high demand by local parents, teachers, and residents, will see a complete overhaul of the school’s facilities. Plans include new classrooms, a support learning hub, updated staff and administration areas, a library, hall, canteen, and enhanced bus stop and drop-off zones. Additionally, an Out of School Hours (OOSH) care facility is set to be introduced, offering increased support for working families.
As part of a broader effort to expand early childhood education, Gillieston Public School will also be home to a brand-new public preschool. The preschool, a key component of the government’s $769 million investment to establish 100 new preschools across NSW, will be located adjacent to the primary school and feature its own dedicated entry and outdoor play space.
Local families are invited to a community consultation session on Monday, 16 September 2024, from 2.30pm to 6.30pm at the school’s library, where they can view the designs and provide input on the proposed upgrades. The event will be held at the school’s Northview Street entrance.
Deputy Premier and Minister for Education, Prue Car, expressed her enthusiasm for the project’s progress.
“This redevelopment is a major win for the Maitland community,” Ms Car said. “Parents and locals have been vocal about the need for upgrades, and I’m proud to see our government deliver on these promises.”
Member for Maitland, Jenny Aitchison, added her support, emphasising the importance of community feedback during the design phase.
“The Maitland region has been waiting far too long for this much-needed redevelopment,” Ms Aitchison said. “I encourage everyone to come along to the information session, take a look at the designs, and help shape the future of Gillieston Public School.”
The project forms part of the government’s broader $8.9 billion investment in school infrastructure, aimed at addressing years of underfunding in regional NSW.
Gillieston Public School Principal Lauren Fernando expressed her excitement about the school’s future.
“We’re thrilled to see these plans come to life,” Ms Fernando said. “Our school is growing, and these modern facilities will create a better learning environment for our students. It’s an exciting time for our entire school community.”
The full redevelopment of Gillieston Public School is set to provide a significant boost to local education, offering students state-of-the-art learning spaces while supporting the community’s growth.
The upgrades are expected to commence next year, with completion timelines to be announced following community feedback and finalised planning.
