Svitzer Australia Opens New Maritime Training Centre in Newcastle

today12 September 2024

Background

Today marked the official opening of Svitzer Australia’s Maritime Training Centre at their Port of Newcastle tug base, a milestone set to boost the region’s maritime capabilities. The state-of-the-art facility will enhance training for the next generation of maritime workers, addressing a critical shortage in the industry.

Svitzer, a global leader in maritime services, is introducing advanced Kongsberg Digital maritime simulators to support crew training and other marine applications. This centre will play a pivotal role in training crews for Svitzer’s innovative TRAnsverse tug vessels, set to enter service in Newcastle by 2025. These vessels will be the second and third of their kind globally.

Svitzer Australia’s Chief Operating Officer, David Phillips, emphasized the company’s commitment to maritime infrastructure and Australian seafarer training. “We are excited to see construction underway for a facility that will provide the latest and most advanced maritime training for pilots, tug masters, and other vessels,” said Phillips. He also highlighted future possibilities to integrate the simulator with other training centres globally.

Local Newcastle builders and contractors have been involved in the construction, and the first staffing appointment, Newcastle Master Ben Holder, will serve as Training Master for the facility.

Lord Mayor of Newcastle, Nuatali Nelmes, expressed her excitement at the opening, calling the centre “a symbol of progress, collaboration, and a shared vision for the future of Newcastle’s maritime industry.” Nelmes also noted the significance of the facility for local jobs and skills development. “It’s wonderful to see Svitzer working to ensure we have the facilities right here in City of Newcastle to train the next generation of tug operators and maritime workers,” she said.

The facility is expected to further support the region’s growing involvement in industries such as offshore wind development and emergency response training, continuing Newcastle’s tradition as a vital hub for maritime operations.
