A 35-year-old woman has been charged after allegedly stealing nearly $5000 worth of clothing and fragrances from retailers in Charlestown over the past two months.

According to Lake Macquarie Police, the thefts occurred on six separate occasions between 23 July 2024 and 6 September 2024. The woman is alleged to have targeted multiple stores in the Charlestown area, walking away with thousands of dollars in stolen merchandise.

After an investigation led by the Lake Macquarie Police District’s Property Crime Team, the woman voluntarily attended Belmont Police Station on Wednesday, 11 September 2024, where she was arrested. She was granted conditional bail and is set to appear in Belmont Local Court on 25 September 2024.

This incident is part of a broader trend of retail theft affecting the region. Similar cases have been reported in other parts of Lake Macquarie and Newcastle, with some stores struggling to deal with repeat offenders.

In February, a group of thieves was arrested after targeting stores in Newcastle’s CBD, netting over $10,000 in stolen goods. While police efforts in both cases have led to arrests, the increasing frequency of such crimes is leaving retailers on edge.

Local authorities have reminded businesses to stay vigilant, reporting suspicious activity and taking steps to secure their stores. Police have also ramped up patrols and are working closely with retailers to reduce the impact of theft on the community.
