As summer looms, Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) and the Rural Fire Service (RFS) have ramped up hazard reduction burns across the Hunter region, including Charlestown and Dudley. These burns, designed to lower the risk of severe bushfires, are critical in protecting communities, infrastructure, and natural habitats.
Yesterday, on-call firefighters from FRNSW Station 255 in Charlestown joined forces with National Parks and Wildlife Service personnel for a controlled burn at Knoll Avenue in Dudley. The burn aimed to reduce fuel loads, mitigating the intensity of potential bushfires in the lead-up to the hotter months. The operation also supports local ecosystems by encouraging new growth and preserving biodiversity in the area.
In addition to reducing fire risks, these planned burns are essential in maintaining ecological health. By clearing excess vegetation, native species can thrive, and habitats are conserved. This process also helps regenerate forests, ensuring the survival of both plant and animal species that depend on these environments.
Over the next few weeks, residents across New South Wales can expect to see more of these controlled burns. From urban fringes to rural landscapes, hazard reduction efforts are well underway, with authorities working around the clock to ensure public safety.
To stay prepared, the public is urged to review their bushfire plans. With bushfire season fast approaching, now is the time for residents to ensure their properties are bushfire-ready. Visit myfireplan.com.au to create or update your bushfire plan and ensure your household is prepared for any potential fire threats.
The RFS and FRNSW are working together to keep communities safe, and with their proactive approach to hazard reduction, they’re ready for whatever the upcoming bushfire season may bring.
