City of Newcastle is investing in the next generation’s efforts to tackle climate change by awarding $75,000 in funding for 12 youth-led climate action projects. These initiatives, ranging from leadership training to upcycling and multimedia projects, aim to foster a climate-conscious and resilient community.

This funding, provided through Bloomberg Philanthropies Youth Climate Action Fund, recognises Newcastle as one of only three Australian cities chosen to deliver this program as part of a global initiative.

Lord Mayor Nuatali Nelmes highlighted the importance of empowering young people to shape local climate solutions. “As one of only three Australian cities to receive this funding from Bloomberg Philanthropies, Newcastle is leading by example in its efforts to engage young people in designing and delivering climate solutions and ensuring their voices and priorities are at the forefront of the city’s climate strategy,” Cr Nelmes said.

“We are incredibly proud to support such a diverse range of youth-led projects, which are not only addressing immediate environmental challenges but also building a stronger, more resilient community for the future.”

Among the recipients is Hunter Intrepid Landcare, which will use the grant for two activities aimed at building climate resilience in the region’s young people. The group, which supports individuals aged 18 to 35, will host a workshop led by local herbalist Pat Collins at Fletcher on 23 November, teaching participants to identify edible plants, including common weeds. This initiative seeks to foster a deeper connection with nature and promote environmental stewardship.

Hunter Intrepid Landcare will also organise a coastal community clean-up, benefiting the environment while promoting social connection among like-minded individuals.

Kate Mannell, coordinator of Hunter Intrepid Landcare, said the funding will help them reach more young people and build resilience in the face of climate change. “This funding from City of Newcastle is crucial for us as an entirely volunteer-run group. It allows us to bring our vision to life by providing young people with the tools and knowledge they need to feel empowered and resilient in the face of climate change,” Miss Mannell said.

“Our goal at Hunter Intrepid Landcare is to create opportunities for young people to connect with nature and each other in meaningful ways. By addressing climate anxiety and building resilience, we hope to inspire the next generation to take action and lead sustainable lives.”

Other funded initiatives include a mini electric vehicle (EV) festival at Lambton High School, where students will develop skills in solar energy and EV technology, and a Youth Climate Leaders’ Summit organised by Surfers for Climate, aimed at empowering young people in environmental advocacy.

The Purple Card Project, a local not-for-profit, will host a youth-led clothes swap and repair event to promote sustainable fashion and reduce textile waste. Upcycle Newcastle will mentor young people in sustainable practices, and Music Therapy Australia will engage young Novocastrians to produce music videos exploring climate action and sustainability.

These projects, driven by local youth, reflect Newcastle’s commitment to building a sustainable future through collaboration and innovative climate solutions.
