The NSW Government has taken a key step towards transforming Newcastle Airport into a global gateway, with the international terminal set to open in 2025.

Destination NSW, the state’s tourism and events agency, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Newcastle Airport to support its efforts in securing new international and domestic routes. This agreement provides financial backing from the Aviation Attraction Fund for a two-year period, starting when new routes begin. The support package includes airline incentives and strategic marketing efforts.

The $250 million upgrade to Newcastle Airport, co-owned by the City of Newcastle and Port Stephens Council, will create a new entry point for visitors to the Hunter region and NSW Mid-North Coast. The redevelopment is forecasted to boost visitor numbers by 850,000 annually and inject $6.2 billion into the regional economy. It is also expected to generate $6.5 billion in freight-related gross regional product and create 4400 jobs over the next 20 years.

Minister for Jobs and Tourism, John Graham, said the agreement would pave the way for Newcastle Airport’s international success.

“The international terminal upgrade will be a huge boost for tourism in the Hunter and Mid-North Coast and will reinforce NSW as Australia’s top entry point,” Minister Graham said. “We’re backing the people of Newcastle to seize the opportunities this upgrade brings. This MOU gives Newcastle Airport the financial certainty it needs to attract new airline services, which will aid in aviation job recovery and give a major lift to the local visitor economy.”

Hunter Minister Yasmin Catley expressed her excitement about the opportunities the upgrade will bring.

“We’re closer than ever to showing off the Hunter to the world, sending a clear message to international visitors – come explore the Hunter when you’re in Australia. Our region has it all, from world-class vineyards to stunning beaches, and we’re ready to welcome the world,” she said.

Newcastle Airport CEO, Dr Peter Cock, hailed the MOU as a vital step in the airport’s journey towards becoming a global hub.

“It’s an exciting time for the region as we approach the completion of our international terminal expansion in mid-2025. I’d like to thank Minister Graham and Destination NSW for their support. This partnership is crucial for our ongoing discussions with key airlines, and initiatives like the Aviation Attraction Fund are critical to securing new services,” Dr Cock said.

Destination NSW CEO, Steve Cox, added that the collaboration will bring significant economic benefits to NSW.

“Through this MOU, Destination NSW will work closely with Newcastle Airport to capitalise on the opportunities that the new international terminal will bring. We’re committed to ensuring the Hunter region is ready for this once-in-a-generation chance,” Mr Cox said.

He also highlighted upcoming events such as the Australian Society of Travel Writers Conference in October 2024 and the 2025 Pacific Airports Roundtable Conference, which will further boost the region’s profile.
