The Liberal mayoral candidates for Newcastle and Lake Macquarie, Callum Pull and Melody Harding, have vowed to oppose the federal government’s proposed offshore wind turbine development if elected on September 14.
The Liberal mayoral candidates for Newcastle and Lake Macquarie, Callum Pull and Melody Harding, have vowed to oppose the federal government’s proposed offshore wind turbine development if elected on September 14.
Ms. Harding also highlighted the opposition from business groups, particularly within the fishing industry. “The Labor Party is pushing forward a proposal that doesn’t meet the expectations of our community,” she added.
Cr. Callum Pull emphasized the need for strong local leadership to challenge the development. “Community groups in Newcastle and Lake Macquarie have been vocal in their opposition,” he said. “We need council leaders who will represent the community’s concerns in this matter.”
He also warned of the potential economic repercussions for local businesses, stating, “Business operators in the Hunter region are worried about the impact this proposal could have on their livelihoods. It’s essential that we act to prevent this development.”
Cr. Pull further criticized Ross Kerridge and his team, describing them as “greens in disguise” and reiterated that the Liberal Party is the only political group in Newcastle that opposes the offshore wind development. “The current council has supported this project, and the only way to change that is by voting Liberal on September 14,” he concluded.
This statement from the Liberal candidates sets the stage for a contentious election, with significant implications for the future of Newcastle and Lake Macquarie’s coastal management.
