The New South Wales Labor Government has committed $670,103 to upgrade the intersection at Maitland Road and Hanbury Street, Mayfield. This critical intersection lies on the B63 route, a state-significant road that stretches from the A43 Pacific Highway at Adamstown Heights to Nelson Bay. The route is a vital link in the Hunter region, passing through key locations such as Westfield Kotara, McDonald Jones Stadium, Kmart Georgetown, Stockton Bridge, and Newcastle Airport.
This upgrade is part of a broader $202 million investment by the Minns Labor Government to enhance road safety across regional roads in New South Wales. The project is included in round two of the Towards Zero – Safer Roads Program, which is designed to address high-risk locations and reduce road trauma across the state. The NSW Government’s $2.8 billion road safety budget aims to prevent over 2,000 fatal or serious injuries over the life of the program by improving infrastructure and managing speed at critical points.
Tim Crakanthorp, the State Member for Newcastle, underscored the importance of this upgrade for the Mayfield community. “Any life lost on our roads is a tragedy,” Crakanthorp stated. “This $670,103 investment will ensure that everyone who travels on or near roads, whether by car, bus, bike, or foot, will return home safely to their loved ones.”
Crakanthorp also acknowledged the specific challenges of the Maitland Road and Hanbury Street intersection, noting that “This intersection is particularly troublesome; I am sure the locals will breathe a sigh of relief once the upgrades are completed.”
The B63 route serves not only as a crucial commuter corridor but also as a key connection for freight and tourism, linking Newcastle and the surrounding areas to vital destinations such as Newcastle Airport and Nelson Bay. The ongoing upgrades reflect the NSW Government’s commitment to the 2026 Road Safety Action Plan, which targets a 50% reduction in road deaths and a 30% reduction in serious injuries by 2030.
