The City of Newcastle has revealed a draft plan aimed at maximising the year-round use of sporting fields at Waratah Park, with a focus on enhancing accessibility, amenities, and recreational opportunities. This plan has been developed in collaboration with local sporting groups and key stakeholders, laying out a vision for the historic park’s future upgrades over the next decade.
The proposed improvements build upon recent enhancements to the site, including the installation of cricket sight screens, upgraded changerooms at Waratah Oval, and the replacement of the existing playground with new equipment. An upgrade of the cricket nets is also currently underway.
Councillor Peta Winney-Baartz, Chair of City of Newcastle’s Sports Infrastructure Working Party, highlighted the importance of the masterplan in improving the park’s accessibility and usage.
“City of Newcastle is committed to upgrading sporting facilities across the community for the benefit of all as part of our Strategic Sports Plan 2020,” Cr Winney-Baartz said.
“Over the past year, we’ve gathered extensive feedback from key user groups, including sporting organisations and the nearby Callaghan College, to inform the development of this draft masterplan for Waratah Park.
“It incorporates provisions for improved and inclusive amenities, while taking advantage of opportunities for both passive and active recreation, all the while preserving the heritage significance of the park.
“We look forward to sharing this plan with the broader community and seeking further feedback to support its long-term vision.”
The draft masterplan outlines a staged approach to infrastructure improvements, ensuring that the park meets the recreation and sporting needs of the community. Proposed enhancements include optimising the field layout, upgrading floodlights, irrigation, and drainage systems to facilitate year-round use. The plan includes provisions for five rugby union or league grounds, three turf and one synthetic cricket wicket, and eight Oztag fields.
Further, the plan includes upgraded amenities and the introduction of a formalised car park with accessible spaces, ensuring that the precinct is more inclusive. Additional features such as informal seating, a three-metre wide shared pathway around the park, fitness stations, and a multi-sport court are also proposed.
Community members are encouraged to learn more about the draft plan and provide their feedback online via the City of Newcastle’s website by 27 September.
