The Energy Corporation of NSW (EnergyCo) has announced a significant commitment to prioritising local job creation and industry participation in the Hunter Transmission Project (HTP). This commitment, referred to as the ‘Hunter-first’ initiative, aims to ensure that businesses and workers in the Hunter region play a central role in the construction and operation of the project.

The HTP is a critical infrastructure project that will involve the construction of a high-voltage transmission line stretching approximately 100 kilometres. This line is a key component of New South Wales’ transition to renewable energy, facilitating the delivery of clean energy from the newly established Renewable Energy Zones to consumers across the state. As the remaining coal-fired power stations in NSW are set to close, the HTP will ensure a reliable electricity supply for the future.

EnergyCo has indicated that the project will require a workforce of around 700 people, encompassing a wide range of trades, services, and professional roles. These opportunities are expected to be made available to local workers and businesses in the Hunter region as part of the Hunter-first initiative.

The types of services and roles needed during the design and construction phases of the HTP include labourers, security guards, plant operators, engineers, planners, and various trades, among others. Additionally, there will be opportunities for local suppliers, including civil contractors, surveyors, electricians, steel fabricators, and catering services.

EnergyCo Executive Director Planning and Communities, Ash Albury, emphasised the importance of local involvement in the project. “The Hunter-first commitment will prioritise local jobs and economic benefit for the people of the Hunter who are the hosts of this critical State significant infrastructure,” Albury said. He also encouraged local businesses to register their interest and attend industry briefings starting the week of 26 August.

The project is not only expected to bolster the local economy but also to create lasting benefits for the region through job creation and infrastructure development. The design and construction contracts for the HTP are anticipated to be awarded from mid-2025, with the project playing a crucial role in NSW’s energy future.
