The City of Newcastle is set to benefit from nearly $10.1 million in federal funding over the next five years, thanks to the Albanese Labor Government’s increased investment in local infrastructure. The funding, provided through the Roads to Recovery (RTR) program, includes a $4 million boost, enabling critical upgrades across several key locations in the city.
The increased investment, part of a broader strategy to enhance community liveability, safety, and economic opportunities, will see the following upgrades:
These new projects add to several recently completed upgrades under the Roads to Recovery program, including works on Fogo Street in Wallsend and Croudace Road in Elermore Vale. These upgrades involved pavement rehabilitation, stormwater drainage installation, and kerb and gutter replacements.
Kristy McBain MP, Minister for Regional Development and Local Government, highlighted the significance of these investments, stating, “When we work together, we get better outcomes for our communities. Increased funding allows local councils to continue delivering priority projects that matter most to their residents.”
Federal Member for Newcastle, Sharon Claydon, emphasized the importance of the funding boost, saying, “Without this federal funding, vital projects in our community wouldn’t be possible. The $10 million investment will ensure Newcastle continues to grow and thrive, delivering what our community deserves.”
Newcastle Lord Mayor Nuatali Nelmes expressed her enthusiasm for the funding, which complements the city’s efforts to improve infrastructure. “This additional support is a testament to our shared commitment to creating a safer and more connected Newcastle. We’re excited to see the positive impact these projects will have on our city,” she said.
In addition to the RTR funding, the Albanese Government is also significantly increasing support for local councils nationwide. The Roads to Recovery program’s funding will rise from $500 million to $1 billion per year, the Road Black Spot Program is increasing to $150 million per year, and $50 million has been added to the new Safer Local Roads and Infrastructure Program.
The combined efforts of local and federal governments are driving substantial improvements across Newcastle, ensuring long-term benefits for residents and visitors alike. The upgrades are expected to support local jobs and enhance Newcastle’s social and economic infrastructure.
