Newy 87.8 recently shared a video on Facebook capturing a V-Set train entering the Southern End of Tickhole Tunnel in Garden Suburb in Newcastle, sparking a wave of nostalgia among local residents and rail enthusiasts. The video, which showcases the tunnel located between Cardiff Station and Kotara Station, prompted a flurry of comments from those reminiscing about their own experiences with the line and its iconic tunnels.
The Tickhole Tunnel is part of the Main North railway line, a crucial route connecting Sydney to Newcastle. This section of the line, which includes the Tickhole and nearby tunnels, was completed in the early 20th century, playing a vital role in the electrification of the Sydney to Newcastle line. The second tunnel, closer to the camera, with its concrete structure, was built to accommodate the increased demands of rail traffic and the larger electric trains that began operating in the mid-20th century.
Commenters on the video shared a variety of memories, from playing in the tunnel as children to commuting to work on the very trains still in use today. Andrew Baker pointed out that the closest tunnel was constructed specifically for the Sydney to Newcastle electrification, a project that modernised the line and improved the reliability of services.
Another user, Nick Jones, expressed surprise at the continued use of V-Set trains from the 1970s. These trains, which have been in service for decades, are known for their longevity and have undergone several refurbishments to extend their operational life. Despite their age, many still find them comfortable and reliable, although opinions vary, with some lamenting the delays in replacing the ageing fleet with the new NSW TrainLink D set, which has yet to enter service despite being delivered in 2019.
For many, the Tickhole Tunnel and the surrounding area evoke memories of a simpler time. Stories of childhood adventures, from daring games of ‘chicken’ with oncoming trains to the thrill of exploring the tunnels, were shared by several users. These personal recollections highlight the enduring connection the local community has with this section of the rail line.
The Tickhole Tunnel may not be the most visually striking of the tunnels on this line, but its significance in the history of Newcastle’s rail network and the fond memories it holds for many locals make it a notable landmark. As the region looks forward to the introduction of new trains, the old V-Sets continue to serve as a reminder of the rich history and shared experiences of rail travel in the Hunter.
