Community Invited to Help Shape Mayfield Local Centre Upgrade

today15 August 2024

Background

City of Newcastle is inviting Mayfield residents and local businesses to participate in a series of “walk-shops” aimed at transforming Maitland Road into a vibrant and active space. These walking tours provide a unique opportunity for the community to share their ideas and experiences directly with the project team.

Scheduled for Thursday, 22 August, the walkshops will start at Dangar Park, near the skatepark, and will explore several key locations along Maitland Road. Feedback gathered during these tours will help inform concept designs for future placemaking activities in Mayfield.

Lord Mayor Nuatali Nelmes emphasised the importance of community involvement in these projects. “We want to ensure that our revitalisation efforts reflect the values and aspirations of the Mayfield community,” Cr Nelmes said. “These upgrades are intended to create inviting spaces where people can meet, relax, and enjoy the local retail offerings in a safe and welcoming environment.”

The walkshops will focus on four potential locations for placemaking:

  • The corner of Hanbury Street and Kerr Street
  • Victoria Street between Maitland Road and Dora Street
  • Corona Street on the south side of Maitland Road
  • Webb Park, south from the Hanbury intersection

Participants will have the chance to provide input on various placemaking considerations throughout the tour. As a token of appreciation, each participant will receive a complimentary beverage from Onyx Espresso Bar, Mayfield, after the walkshop.

“We’re looking forward to working with the community to develop plans that will enhance the livability of Mayfield,” Cr Nelmes added. “Whether it’s infrastructure, landscaping, or public art, we want to create spaces that everyone in the community can enjoy.”

Residents who cannot attend the walkshops can still contribute their ideas and feedback online via the City of Newcastle’s “Have Your Say” page, with submissions open until 13 September.

The Mayfield Local Centre upgrade is part of City of Newcastle’s broader Local Centres program, which focuses on revitalising neighbourhoods across the city. Concept planning for priority sites in Mayfield is expected to commence in 2025, with construction scheduled for 2026.

The Local Centres program has already delivered significant upgrades to several areas across Newcastle, including:

  • Beresford Avenue, Beresfield
  • Mitchell Street, Stockton
  • Young Street, Carrington
  • James Street Plaza, Hamilton
  • Llewellyn Street, Merewether
  • Joslin Street, Kotara
  • Sandgate Road, Shortland
  • Nelson Street, Wallsend
  • Blackbutt Village, New Lambton
  • Darby Street, Cooks Hill

These upgrades have been instrumental in enhancing the livability and attractiveness of these neighbourhoods, making them more inviting for both residents and visitors.

Mayfield residents are encouraged to register for the walkshops and take an active role in shaping the future of their local area. The event will begin at 11 am on Thursday, 22 August, at Dangar Park, Mayfield. To register, visit https://PlanningMayfield.eventbrite.com.au.

This is your opportunity to be part of the positive changes happening in your community.
