Maitland City Council has taken a significant step towards securing $46 million in funding for vital infrastructure upgrades across the Thornton North urban growth precinct and the broader city. In a unanimous decision at last night’s council meeting, councillors voted to proceed with a major grant submission aimed at addressing transport, housing, and recreational needs in this rapidly growing region.
The council plans to apply for a $33 million grant under the Regional Precincts and Partnerships Program (RPPP) and the Housing Support Program. These funds will target several essential projects in Thornton North, including $25 million for the upgrade of the Haussman Drive intersection and $5 million for a new sportsground in the Sophia Waters area. Additionally, a separate $13 million grant submission will be made under the Housing Support Program to fund Stage 3 of the ongoing transformation of the Maitland Resource Recovery Facility on Mount Vincent Road.
Maitland City Council General Manager Jeff Smith emphasised the importance of these infrastructure projects, noting that they are crucial for the communities of Thornton, Chisholm, and the wider Maitland area.
“These upgrades are vital for improving transport links, housing options, and providing much-needed recreational facilities in one of our key growth areas,” Mr Smith said. “With council’s support now secured, we will move forward with the application process and remain optimistic about a positive outcome.”
The council will now focus on completing a detailed business case to support these grant applications before submitting the final proposals.
