Cessnock, NSW — The popular Bridges Hill Skatepark in Cessnock has officially reopened to the public following the completion of significant upgrades. The project, funded by the NSW Government, involved a complete overhaul of the park, including the demolition of the old skatepark and the construction of new ramps, rails, and bowls, designed to enhance the experience for local skaters.
The $592,000 project, which began in February 2023, also included the installation of additional seating areas for parents, spectators, and non-skaters, making the park more inclusive for the broader community. The upgrades were developed through a multi-stage community engagement process, allowing local skaters and park users to have direct input into the design, ensuring the new facilities truly cater to the needs of the community.
The revamped park now features a unique design that includes transition areas, open bowls, and street sections, offering diverse experiences for riders of all skill levels. Located just a short ride from the main street of Cessnock, the skatepark is conveniently situated alongside the region’s destination adventure playground and half-court basketball court, making it a prime location for recreational activities.
Minister for Regional NSW, Tara Moriarty, expressed her enthusiasm for the project, highlighting the park’s potential as a training ground for future skateboarding champions. “With the fantastic results in France and Australia bringing home a gold medal for skateboarding, I’m sure this park will be a real drawcard for local young people. It could easily become the training ground for another Arisa Trew or Tony Hawk,” she said. Moriarty also praised the local skating community’s involvement in the project, noting their passion and dedication to the sport.
State Member for Cessnock, Clayton Barr, echoed these sentiments, emphasising the importance of community involvement in the project. “The new upgrades have been designed with the assistance of local skaters and park users, which will make it more user-friendly. It is great to see an inclusive and safe space for recreation available to young people from the local area,” Barr said.
Cessnock City Mayor, Jay Suvaal, also expressed his delight at the completion of the upgrades, noting that they reflect Council’s ongoing commitment to providing improved recreational facilities for the community. “We are thrilled to offer our community a revitalised Bridges Hill Skatepark, now open and ready for enjoyment. Upgrading infrastructure like Bridges Hill Skatepark highlights Council’s ongoing commitment to enhancing local infrastructure for the benefit of our community,” Mayor Suvaal said.
The reopening of Bridges Hill Skatepark marks a significant milestone for the Cessnock community, providing a modern, inclusive, and safe space for young people to engage in recreation and build community connections.
