The Hunter Science Festival is making a grand comeback in 2024, promising a day packed with engaging and interactive science activities, all completely free and designed for kids and curious minds of all ages.
Among the festival highlights is the return of the much-loved Poo Palace, a giant inflatable exhibit courtesy of the Hunter Medical Research Institute (HMRI). Participants can embark on a fascinating journey through the digestive system, guided by HMRI’s gastrointestinal experts, affectionately known as the Grand Poobahs.
Kids and adults can also test their engineering skills by building and racing their own electric vehicles with the Hunter Innovation and Science Hub (HISH). Meanwhile, the City of Newcastle invites visitors to climb into a real garbage truck, meet a driver, and learn about waste management, composting, and recycling.
Visitors can explore a variety of activity and display tables hosted by organisations such as Hunter Water, the Irukandji Shark and Ray Centre, Hunter Wetlands, Hunter Landcare, and the Hunter Geological Society. For a quieter moment, Newcastle Libraries offers a science-themed storytime zone, complete with tech kits available for borrowing.
In addition, Fizzics Education will present Bushfire Science Shows, while the Future Science Talks: Comedy Edition promises to entertain. Visitors can also pot a pollinator plant to take home, with local native plants grown in Kotara nursery. Experts will be on hand to discuss gardening and the environment, ensuring that participants leave with both a plant and new knowledge on attracting native wildlife to their gardens.
The HMRI Poo Palace will extend its operating hours until 5pm due to popular demand, with bookings available on the day. Visitors are encouraged to bring a picnic to enjoy in Museum Park, with coffee available from the Smiling Monk Cafe.
Cost: Free entry, no registration required!
Ages: Suitable for all ages.
The Hunter Medical Research Institute (HMRI) has been a cornerstone of health and medical research in the Hunter region since its establishment. The HMRI first opened its doors on Hunter Street, Newcastle, where it laid the groundwork for its current status as a leader in medical research. The Poo Palace, an educational tool designed to teach about digestion and gastrointestinal health, has been a popular exhibit at various community events, providing a unique and interactive way for people to learn about their bodies.
