In an alarming revelation by Jenny Aitchison MP, newly activated seatbelt detection cameras across New South Wales have identified approximately 11,400 seatbelt offences within just three weeks of operation. This staggering figure surpasses the total number of seatbelt fines issued by NSW Police throughout the entirety of 2023.

These cameras, which were originally designed to detect mobile phone use while driving, have now been equipped to catch seatbelt violations. The initiative follows a legislative change aimed at improving road safety by leveraging existing technology to enforce compliance with the 50-year-old seatbelt law.

Jenny Aitchison MP, Minister for Regional Transport and Roads, emphasised the importance of this measure, noting that despite decades of public awareness campaigns, a significant number of motorists still fail to buckle up. She highlighted that not wearing a seatbelt doubles the risk of death in the event of a crash, a simple but often ignored fact that continues to result in preventable fatalities on NSW roads.

The introduction of seatbelt enforcement via cameras is part of a broader strategy to reduce road fatalities and serious injuries. The NSW Government has committed to reinvesting all fine revenue from these cameras back into road safety initiatives. This measure is particularly crucial as data indicates a high percentage of fatalities and serious injuries on country roads involve individuals not wearing seatbelts.

Public safety campaigns are being rolled out to inform drivers and passengers about the new enforcement measures and the critical importance of wearing seatbelts. The government’s message is clear: whether on a quiet country road or a busy motorway, there is no excuse for not wearing a seatbelt. This ongoing effort aims to reinforce the life-saving message of ‘click clack front and back’ to all road users across the state.
