A 17-year-old male from Raymond Terrace faced severe penalties after being caught speeding on the Pacific Highway. Around 2:40 pm on Saturday, 3rd August 2024, Raymond Terrace Highway Patrol officers clocked a Subaru Impreza sedan, displaying red ‘P’ plates, travelling at 116 km/h in a 100 km/h zone.

Upon passing the police, the vehicle accelerated to approximately 170 km/h before being checked at 156 km/h. The car was eventually stopped, emitting a large amount of smoke from the engine bay. The driver, holding a Class C Provisional P1 licence with a 90 km/h limit, admitted he had an adrenaline rush and tried to evade the police but slowed down to avoid endangering other motorists.

The driver was issued an infringement notice for P1 Driver exceeding speed over 45 km/h, carrying a fine of $2959 and 6 demerit points. His licence was suspended for 6 months, with a further suspension likely due to excessive demerit points. The average speed over 2.1 kilometres was calculated at 141 km/h. The young driver had obtained his licence only two months prior.
